Learning Objectives

At the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  • Describe COVID-19, its effects, available treatment options and identify populations at high-risk for severe outcomes

  • Use proper communication techniques to address COVID-19 prevention, including vaccine hesitancy and patient exposure risk assessment

  • Understand that long COVID (or post-COVID condition; PCC) is a disease in itself

  • Identify vulnerable populations for long COVID (or PCC) and apply a systematic approach to management

Dr. Alan Kaplan

Alan Kaplan is a Family Physician working in York Region, Ontario, Canada and the Chairperson of the Family Physician Airways Group of Canada (www.fpagc.com), the Past-Chairperson of the Respiratory Section of the College of Family Physicians of Canada, and Senate member of the International Primary Care Respiratory Group. He co-chaired the Community Standards of COPD program for Health Quality Ontario. In addition, Dr. Kaplan provides his expertise to a number of medical journals across the world.

Dr. Grace Lam

Dr. Grace Lam is a clinician scientist and assistant professor in the Division of Pulmonary Medicine at the University of Alberta. With the support of her Division and Department, she helped launch the first post COVID-19 clinic in Alberta in June 2020 and one of the first in the country. Since then, she has published a number of papers on the exploration of risk factors for long COVID and currently leads or is involved in numerous local and national long COVID projects, focused on furthering the understanding of the pathophysiology of long COVID. Her innovative work and contributions were recently recognized as she was named one of the Top 40 under 40 by Edify Magazine.

Dr. Kim Lavoie

Dr. Kim Lavoie, co Lead of the International Behavioural Trials Network (IBTN), holds the Chair of Behavioural Medicine at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM) and is a researcher in the Chronic Disease Research Division at Hôpital du Sacré-Coeur de Montréal. She is a Full Professor in the Department of Psychology at UQAM and an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at University of Montreal, and she is an internationally recognized expert in motivational communication.

  • How long is this course offered

    This course is offered between September 2023 and September 2024. In order to receive your certificate for credits, all lessons must be completed before July 2024.
